Bridge warningBridge warning close-up

This high-risk scene comes to us from the U.K., where bridge crossings over small canals are apparently unusually hazardous. “Caution – Hold the side rail at all times whilst on the bridge,” the warning sign says.

Note the life-ring at the right side of the photo at left.

The only question is, do people have to walk to the center, read the sign, then walk back over to the side to hold onto the rail? Wouldn’t it be better to just tell them, “Walk in the center”?

“No wonder my job is getting harder and harder,” our contributor observed.

Note: Here's an update from another correspondent. "I think you have missed the whole problem with the bridge and it is one that occurs too often. The designer has chosen a surface finish that looks great but is extremely slippery. I recall one in an arcade in Melbourne (Australia). The walkway was on a mild slope and it was like walking on ice when it rained. Eventually they ground the surface off, which didn’t do much for the appearance but at least it was safer to walk on. Looking at the tiles in the photographs if is a fair chance they have the same problem only a lot worse because of the slope of the arch."
